Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Early Detection and Comprehensive Protection with New Products from Liberty

With the rising prevalence among women of various backgrounds, breast cancer remains a significant health issue in South Africa. It is the most frequent cancer among white and Asian women and the second most common among black and coloured women. Early diagnosis, regular screenings, and appropriate treatment can significantly improve outcomes, with nearly 90% of patients living for many years when breast cancer is found in its early stages.

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month in South Africa, a nationwide campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the illness. This initiative, driven by both public and private healthcare sectors, seeks to educate women from all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds on the importance of early detection, self-breast examinations, and regular mammograms. Presenting oneself early for treatment can result in more successful outcomes, reducing pain and suffering, and ultimately lowering mortality rates.

Liberty’s Improved Cancer Protection

Aligned with the emphasis on early detection and the need for comprehensive cancer support, Liberty is introducing several innovative enhancements to its Lifestyle Protector cover, including a new cancer policy designed to provide protection well beyond conventional insurance limits. This program not only highlights the need for continuous support for cancer patients but also ensures that individuals are financially covered throughout their cancer journey.

Liberty’s recently launched Cancer Claim Booster offers an additional 25% payout if cancer progresses beyond stage three or four, despite therapy, or if the patient has a life expectancy of fewer than twelve months. This coverage acknowledges that cancer is often unpredictable and that, in certain situations, ongoing treatment and financial assistance are required beyond the initial diagnosis and treatments.

Kresantha Pillay, Chief Specialist for Risk Solutions at Liberty, explains, “Cancer is never a predictable journey, and previously, patients would simply receive an insurance payout at the beginning, only to find that they needed more funds if the disease persisted down the line. Our new cancer policy closes this gap, providing financial support when it’s needed most.”

Extra Coverage for Critical Illness

In addition to the improvements in cancer coverage, Liberty is also introducing a Critical Illness Booster with an extra 25% to 100% payout for certain long-term conditions requiring continuous treatment, such as limb loss or heart transplants. This improvement ensures that policyholders have the financial resources to manage both the psychological and physical effects of life-altering conditions.

“Events like limb loss or heart transplants can have long-term effects on someone’s finances,” Pillay explains. “This extra support guarantees access to necessary therapies like anti-rejection medication or physical therapy, helping patients manage the lifetime burden of these conditions.”

Early Cancer and Mild Illness Coverage

For less severe conditions, Liberty has introduced comprehensive coverage, paying 10% of the Living Lifestyle sum assured. This provides financial relief even for minor health issues, helping to cover the costs of medical treatments such as the removal of pre-malignant lesions or short hospital stays for conditions like Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

Comprehensive Family Coverage

Reflecting the global trend of longer education periods, Liberty has also extended its coverage to include children under the Living Lifestyle policy up to the age of 25. This update ensures that young adults are fully protected during critical developmental years, providing families with more comprehensive coverage.

Combining Awareness with Financial Security

Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as an important reminder of the need for regular screenings and early detection.
